 Philippine National Games

The Philippines' Top male wall climber said the country has a chance to win the gold as the sport makes its debut at the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November.
Miel Pahati will fly to Arco, Italy next week to compete in the IFSC world climbing championships, hoping to sharpen his skills while trying to reach the finals of one of the three events.

Pahati, who has been competing in the sport since he was 20, told reporters that he will vie in the speed climbing, 60-meter climb and bouldering the Arco competitions, which basically will be the same events in Indonesia.

He and fellow national bet and female climber Ina Flores captured the gold medals in the recent Philippine National Games and will spearhead the country's drive in the South Sumatran capital of Palembang.

The 29-year-old Pahati has a personal best of 15 seconds in the 50-meter speed contest, an event where he captured the gold in the Southeast Asian wall climbing circuit in 2009.

Mountain Hard Wear brand manager Manny Batungbacal, meanwhile, said the national bets' chances of clinching medals in Indonesia is high "considering the preparations they have been undergoing over the past six months."

Both Batungbacal and Pahati said that aside from the hosts, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia loom as the Filipinos' challengers for the gold.
