Expect more rains from 'Falcon'

MANILA, Philippines — After the departure of tropical depression “Egay,” expect more rains to batter the country due to the southwest monsoon, enhanced by new tropical depression “Falcon” east of the Visayas, the state weather bureau reported Tuesday.
Tropical Depression “Falcon”
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the eye of the storm was located by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) 670 kilometers (km) east of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, “Falcon” was moving west-northwest with a speed of up to 19 kph.

Senior weather forecaster Rene Paciente said that while there are indications that Falcon would intensify into a tropical storm within the next 12 to 24 hours, it was still too far to directly affect the country Tuesday afternoon.

Paciente said Falcon might bring rains over the western section of Mindanao starting Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

“The present track of Falcon shows that it may not make landfall but will only traverse the east Philippine Sea,” Paciente said.

“PAGASA will continue to monitor any development in its course because Falcon is still far from the country and may still change its track,” he added.

Paciente said Metro Manila will continue to experience rains brought about by the southwest monsoon, as it is being enhanced by the storm, until Thursday morning.

Falcon is forecast to be 440 km east of Virac, Catanduanes this morning, 420 km east-northeast of Casiguran, Aurora Thursday morning, and 350 km east of Basco, Batanes on Friday morning.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) once again placed all its units on heightened alert due to the entry of another storm.

Admiral Ramon Liwag, PCG commandant, said he instructed the PCG field offices particularly in places were major passenger port terminals are located to be on alert and monitor the developments on the latest weather disturbance that have entered the Philippine Territory.

“We have already dispatched our Deployable Response Group (DRG) Coast Guard Special Operation Group (CGSOG) divers to these districts that might be affected by the storm”, Liwag said.
Deathtoll: 13

Massive flooding triggered by monsoon rains and tropical depression Egay affected at least one million people in Luzon and Mindanao, leading to the death of 13, since June 1, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

Twelve of the fatalities were reported in Mindanao, where floods have affected 575 villages since June 1, while one victim from Bataan drowned during heavy monsoon rains enhanced by Egay.

The storm’s lone casualty was identified as Mary Joy Reyes, 3, of Barangay Tipo, Dinalupihan, Bataan.

Two others, identified as Dorina Reyes, 5, of Barangay Tipo, Dinalupihan, Bataan; and Ariel Delos Santos, 15, of Purok 5 Barangay Old Cabalan, Olongapo City, on the other hand, were listed as missing.

The NDRRMC said Egay’s rains also triggered floods in some areas in Metro Manila, Bataan, Bulacan, and Pampanga.
