DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) – At least three miners have been killed as tunnels collapsed following a landslide triggered by heavy rains in southern Philippines, local officials said on Thursday.
The accident occurred in gold-rich T'boli town in Mindanao's South Cotabato province, according to Bobong Dimpot, head of the province's village affairs office.
Dimpot told local radio livestock animals also drowned after the Sapali river in T'bolo, Surallah and Banga towns overflowed, flooding farms and forcing some residents to evacuate to higher grounds.
A bridge also collapsed in T'boli following the landslide and flood, he said, while provincial social welfare officials were now in the area to assess the situation and extend assistance to affected families.
