AYALA Museum currently features the works of celebrated artist and art educator Araceli Limcaco-Dans (born 1929) in the exhibition entitled "Looking In: Araceli Limcaco-Dans Retrospective."
This retrospective exhibition gathers a total of 185 portraits, still life paintings, drawings, prints, as well as works in various media from the Philippine Women’s University, Ateneo de Manila University, several private collections and the family’s collection.
A series of corollary lectures are also scheduled for the months of March and April: "Art of the Innocents" was on 19 March with the artist’s daughter Barbra Dans; "Traditional and Contemporary Philippine Art" on 2 April with acclaimed visual artist Dr. Brenda Fajardo; "Calypso: The Pig that would have become Lechon" on 9 April with writer and entertainment columnist Nestor Torre, and pictures by Araceli Limcaco-Dans; and "My Evolution as a Visual Artist" on 30 April with Araceli Dans. All lectures will be held at Ayala Museum.
When Araceli "Cheloy" Limcaco Dans Events graduated with a college degree in painting at the University of the Philippines in 1950, Philippine art was experimenting with and exploring the modes of modernism. The art of Araceli Dans persevered and persisted with a vision that endured throughout her oeuvre.
Her mentors included National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino, who championed the conservative or traditional style in both art practice and rhetoric.
Araceli Dans is also one of the foremost art educators in the country. She initiated developments in the fine arts programs of PWU and ADMU. After pioneering the teaching of art on TV in the Ateneo Educational Television from 1964 to 1968, she founded the Philippine Art Educators Association (PAEA) with Dr. Fajardo.
Living With over 150 exhibitions here and abroad and a portfolio spanning more than 60 years of commitment to her craft, Araceli Dans’ contribution to Philippine arts was recognized in the 1999 Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Awards, Citizen’s Award for Television, and the Mariang Maya Awards, just to name a few.
"Looking In: Araceli Limcaco-Dans Retrospective" runs from 8 March to 1 May, 2011 at the Ayala Museum Ground Floor Gallery, and Luna and Amorsolo Rooms at the Third Floor. The exhibition was made possible with support from Willy and Geraldine Ocier, Fresh Fruit Ingredients, Inc. and Soloil, Inc.
